Gautam Mukherjee

Gautam Mukherjee, born in 1960, was raised in a three centuries-old ancestral home in North Kolkata. His family values have had a great impact on him which is reflected in his paintings. As Gautam grew up, he started observing and appreciating festivities, decorations, and above all the divine beauty of Maa Durga. He was particularly attracted to the shape of her eyes. The artist captures the daily activities of a Bengali family. The artist believes that eyes are the most prominent feature in a person, they are the windows to a person’s soul. Along with the human figures, onlookers can also see antique mirrors, doors and windows, old wooden cupboards, vintage telephones, etc in these paintings. In his own unique way, the artist preserves the culture of the bygone days. His paintings are his expressions of love, affection, and sentiments shared by a family. He captures the simplicity of daily life in vibrant colors. Gautam also explores the love and respect shared by two people by their physical proximity as he believes that the physical distance between two people says a lot about their emotional connection.
